Summary


Law Day is an annual celebration of the rule of law. The founder of Law Day, the late ABA President Charles S. Rhyne, introduced the idea of a day specially set aside to demonstrate that respect for the rule of law is the key to individual freedom and justice.

President Dwight Eisenhower issued the first Law Day proclamation on May 1, 1958. In 1961, May 1 was designated by a joint resolution of Congress as the official date for celebrating Law Day.
