Market forces could push builders to construct more affordable housing in St. Charles County, say those in the industry, but only if local governments remove regulatory barriers.

During a discussion on housing last week, home builder Tom Hughes said he sees a trend on the part of developers to get more work- force housing built in the county. But an increased demand for work- force housing won't translate into an increased supply if local politicians don't remove the zoning and regulatory barriers that prevent such housing from being built, he later added.
