Open your mail or answer your phone at home these days, and there is a good chance some charitable organization is asking you for money. Faced with higher energy costs for their cars and homes, more people appear to be saying, Sorry.

During the past year, Americans have been asked to open their wallets and purses to help victims of the tsunami that struck parts of southern Asia, several hurricanes that devastated parts of the Gulf Coast from Florida to Texas, and victims of earthquakes, wars and other catastrophes that have hit people throughout the world. At the same time, those not-for-profits that go about the daily chores of feeding the hungry, finding shelter for the homeless and helping the disabled still rely on people's generosity in order to fulfill their missions. And it's getting tougher to raise that money.
