A California man facing federal charges in North Dakota related to practicing law without a license worked for a short time on a case for a St. Louis Blues hockey player who pleaded guilty four years ago to plotting to kill his agent.

About a year after a federal judge in East St. Louis sentenced hockey player Michael Danton to 7 1/2 years in prison, Howard O. Kieffer filed a motion to set aside the sentence. In July, Kieffer admitted to the North Dakota federal court that he was not, as he had claimed to be, a lawyer licensed by the state of California or even a graduate of the Antioch Law School in Washington, D.C.
