Interstate 70 often has been referred to as the gateway to St. Charles County, and for years, St. Charles officials worked to spur redevelopment - with mixed success - of the quadrants surrounding the intersection of I-70 and South Fifth Street.

The southeast quadrant got a boost when ShowMe Aquatics and Fitness purchased 13.5 acres in late 2004. Tentative plans call for the not-for-profit to open a $25 million aquatics facility in 2008 that offers physical therapy and fitness programs for the disabled. Now comes word that home builder Greg Whittaker has been working with ShowMe on a redevelopment project in the area that would complement the aquatics center. Whittaker said he is not ready to reveal details of his proposal, but sources said he is looking at building a mixed-use development.
