St. Louis, St. Charles Meet to Discuss Regional Wi-Fi

Summary


St. Louis County wants to partner with St. Charles County to bring wireless technology to the larger metropolitan region. The two county councils plan to meet on Wednesday to discuss the possibility of forming a public-private partnership with technology companies to create a regional system. So far, not many municipalities have successfully implemented wireless systems for their residents. For example, it was recently reported that St. Louis city's attempt to implement a citywide wireless system failed because of the high cost of infrastructure and poor coverage.

But St. Louis city isn't alone. The Reason Foundation, a national public-policy research organization, stated in its Annual Privatization Report 2007 that many predictable problems emerge when cities launch municipal wireless systems, including cost- prohibitive infrastructure, low usage and poor coverage.
