Missouri Supreme Court Nixes Defenders' Relief Plan

Summary


The Supreme Court ruled against the state public defender's system Tuesday, upholding trial judges' appointment of public defenders in cases where private attorneys had withdrawn.

The state's highest court in May had issued preliminary writs barring the trial courts in Boone and Buchanan counties from ordering the public defender's office to step in. But after hearing arguments in early October, the court undid those writs Tuesday without a written opinion explaining its reasoning.
